We expected much more from an historic property, especially from one owned by Waldorf-Astoria. There were no high-end restaurants near the resort, but we found a new favorite (Bagatelle's on Duvall St.) Gladly, the resort was away from the noise of Duvall St. We received food & beverage compensation, but the options at the resort were very limited.

The upgrade FINALLY happened almost 8 hours later after a significant hassle-factor. Our first night overlapped a conference for anesthesiologists and we ended up in a handicapped accessible room, with the promise that we would have a room upgrade the next morning. We decided on Key West because it was the most tropical place we could go in March without leaving the US. This was our first and probably last trip to Key West. The Casa was a big miss for us and I should have heeded the reviews here and stayed elsewhere. I admit that my wife and I are spoiled by our stays at truly high-end properties where they get 99% of everything right 99% of the time. Breakfast buffet is average - but drinks are handled by the wait staff - getting an OJ or water refill was nearly impossible. Waits for food (after ordering) were sometimes as long as an hour - once it took me 60 minutes just to pay the bill - yeah the thought crossed my mind too - just leave. Once you get past the fact that you are going to be robbed (which is the norm at most hotel settings) you at least hope that your going to 1) get good service or 2) get good food On both accounts the Casa pretty much failed us. The service was either fantastic (front desk, concierge, H20 concierge) or HORRIBLE (Sun Sun wait staff, breakfast wait staff) since we were traveling with our little guy, we decided to eat our Breakfast and Lunch on property (we don't normally do this at hotels). luckily the suite had more floor space but in a regular room it looked cramped. I'd like to see them take some time to re-think the furniture in these rooms. The Carpets in the main building are a little worn - but at a hotel that sits on the beach with no foot wash coming off the sand - dirty worn carpet will happen. Now that we travel with a toddler its a little more important to have clean floors :-) We asked and the housekeeping staff cleaned the floors again and we didn't have to ever ask again. The room was large with wooden floors - and more than a little dirty. We had a corner room with an ocean 'view' (the palm trees at the Casa are mature and tall - so they obstruct some of the view). We were upgraded to an ocean view suite in the main (read older) building. This is the only real downside about the beach and had we known this (or had a done a better job reading the reviews) I would have stayed at 'The Reach' Onto the rooms. A word of caution about the beach - it is a coral and grass beach which means that for the most part if you want to swim in the ocean you need to use the pier that is built out over the coral to get to deeper water to swim.

The Casa Marina has two pretty decent sized pools - and while the property was a capacity during our stay, the pool areas were full but not crowded as most people did a pretty good job of spreading around the property. The views from the lobby to the pools and beach is nearly perfect at the Casa. First lets start with the location - its a decent but not great location - the sister property 'The Reach' seems to have a much better location for quick walks off property to eat and explore. The Casa Marina is a property that has it all - and thats not always a good thing. I now understand the wildly varying reviews in this forum.
